Materials I Use
These are some of my Must-Haves and Favourites.
I will edit it from time to time, so make sure to subscribe to my newsletter dedicated to artists for any updates to the list.
Material List
Books
Basic Human Anatomy, by Roberto Osti and Peter Drake
Imaginative Realism, by James Gurney
Brushes
I have used Rosemary’s brushes for years! My absolute must-have and cannot-live-without are the Kolinsky brushes. I also use the stubby shorts quite a bit.
Canvas
At the moment, I only use fine/smooth linen canvas, oil primed. I have my custom made from The Sydney Art Store.
Charcoals
I love the General charcoal pencils, as well as their charcoal powder. Make sure to get enough sandpaper sharpener and paper stumps.
Easel
They have a variety of easels. I use the double tiered heavy duty easel. They also have desktop easel, plein air easel, storage trolley, and a range of art supplies like oil pastels and watercolors, too.

Oil
Unlike linseed oil, walnut oil does not yellow over time. It is also the best for cleaning your brushes during a painting session.
Paper
I love both Strathmore Vellum paper, and Fabriano or ArchesHot Press watercolor paper for my charcoal and pencil drawings.
Here’s vellum paper in 11”x14”, 14”x17”, and 22”x30”.
Solvent
Gamsol from Gamblin is the only solvent I use. It is odorless and and supposedly one of the safest solvents on the market. I use it for the initial raw umber sketch and wash over the canvas.
Varnish
I only use gloss varnish for my oil paintings. I have used both the gloss varnish from Gamblin and Langridge.
